Guided Tours

Our guided coach tours combine a great day out at Oswaldtwistle Mills with the chance to explore the stunning scenery of our beautiful county. Our professional tour guides offer a wealth of knowledge covering the history and heritage of the landscape. Tours begin and end at Oswaldtwistle Mills, last 60-90 minutes and can be booked 7 days a week throughout the year (subject to tour guide availability.) Group organisers need to provide their own coach with a microphone and spare seat for our tour guide (exact tour routes may be amended due to traffic and weather conditions.)

VALLEY, SPELLS & FELLS

A memorable visit to England’s largest village, Whalley. Home to a ruined medieval abbey, one of the earliest Tudor grammar schools and the largest Victorian viaduct in Lancashire. Continue through unforgettable countryside to the beautiful village of Downham, home to many films and BBC drama series. We travel onto the tranquil ruins of Sawley Abbey before ascending the famous Pendle Hill, long associated with the Lancashire witches. We descend into Sabden village, home of 2 of the Pendle Witches before concluding the tour with more stunning scenic views of the valley.

TUDOR TALES

The tour starts with a view of the magnificent Samlesbury Hall, one of the top 10 most haunted houses in England. Hoghton Tower is next, with historic connections to William Shakespeare, James I and VI of Scotland and the knighting of Sir Loin of Beef. We pass through Clayton-le-Moors (so named for the ‘clay on the moors’) and hear of its connections with the Lancashire cotton workers and Irish navigators, before finishing with a fascinating visit to England’s largest village, Whalley.

GOLDEN VALLEY HIGHLIGHTS

The ‘golden’ Rossendale Valley led the world in the industrial revolution of the late 1800s. Start this tour enjoying the stunning scenery of Turton and Edgworth, childhood home of veteran film star Shirley Anne Fields. Hear of the tragic suffering of the Luddites as we cross the moors near historical Turton Tower. Learn how Ramsbottom got its name and its connection with music, heritage and the arts. Passing by Haslingden and Rawtenstall, key towns during the revolution, learn of the whisky spinners and stories about Holland’s Pies at Baxenden, catch sight of the beautiful Haworth Art Gallery, Accrington Park and tales of the Accrington Pals in WW1.

Discover Nab Lane of ‘The Road To Nab End’ fame, Blakey Moor, King Street and learn what a Havelock is and how it helped the French foreign legion. RIBBLE VALLEY

Travelling through the beautiful Ribble Valley, we visit Ribchester, one of Roman Britain’s largest ports and forts, Longridge, in the fells of Bowland, and Chipping, the stunning medieval gateway to one of Queen Elizabeth II’s residential homes. Enjoy a 360° panoramic view of the valley on Jeffrey Hill before we descend passing Stonyhurst, the breathtaking Tudor Hall of the Shireburns and now a leading Jesuit College. Famous former residents include Arthur Conan Doyle and JRR Tolkien. We continue through Great Mitton where we see the 1000 year old Mitton before our final destination of England’s largest village, Whalley.

THREE RIVERS

Journeying across the Rivers Ribble, Calder and Hodder, this tour abounds with fascinating history, beautiful scenery and stories of times gone by. Learn of the ruined abbey at Whalley, the medieval church of St. Mary and All Saints, admire the Victorian viaduct which spans the valley and marvel at the outstanding architecture of Stonyhurst College, a Jesuit boarding school where Tolkien, author of “Lord of the Rings,” once resided. PENDLE WITCH COUNTRY

In the Pendle villages of Roughlee and Barley, you’ll learn of the sad tale of Alice Nutter, Elizabeth Southerns (Demdike) and Anne Whittle (Chattox), who were accused, tried and found guilty of witchcraft in 1612 in what is now one of the most famous witch trials in English history. Admire the magnificent scenery, gaze at the moody hulk of Pendle Hill and see the ‘eye of God’ in the tower of St. Mary’s Church.

HAUNTED HISTORIES

Join award-winning Lancashire ghost tour guide, Simon Entwistle, for tales of ghosts, murders and mysteries as you journey over the River Ribble and pass-by some of East Lancashire’s most beautiful, famous landmarks.
